God Loves You Just the Way You Are

We’re in the middle of talking about our sixth core value, achieving God’s purposes means taking faith-filled risks. This always involves change. We’re also coming up on Valentine’s Day, so this seems like a good time to talk about something very important.

God loves you just the way you are.

Take a moment to think about that. Let it sink in. There is not one single thing you could do to make God love you any more than He does right now. And nothing you do could ever make Him love you less. There are no strings on God’s love.

You’ve probably heard someone say, “God loves you just the way you are, but He loves you too much to leave you that way.” Typically, this quote comes up whenever people start talking about repentance or discipleship. Just because God loves us and is willing to forgive us is no excuse to overlook sin in our lives. That’s what we call cheap grace. And forgiveness might be free, but grace isn’t cheap.

So while I might agree with the sentiment that I think lurks behind the above quote, I don’t agree with the quote itself. God’s love for us is never in question, even when we refuse to change. It is our love for God that must be proven.

God loves you enough to die for you. Never doubt that. But how much do you love Him? Do you love Him enough to stop excusing your sin? Do you love Him enough to start acting as His hands and feet in the world? Do you love God enough to change?

Changing our lives to please God is how we show Him that we love Him. It is not a way for us to earn His love. We already have that. Just read Romans 5:8 if you ever need a reminder. In fact, you should just go ahead and memorize that verse so it’s in the back of your mind whenever you start to doubt. Then you’ll be showing your love for God by memorizing Scripture and also assuring yourself of how much God loves you. Win-Win!

Whenever you start taking faith-filled risks, there will always be a level of uncertainty. As God calls you closer and closer to Him, you will have to constant re-evaluate your attitudes and actions and change accordingly. But one thing will never change.

God loves you just the way you are.
